About Me

Hello, my name is Delaney, and I am a third-semester DACSS student based in Central Massachusetts. My interests span a variety of topics, including social justice (feminism, mental health advocacy, racial equity, and immigrant rights) and the arts (drawing, painting, film, animation, and performance art). I have a particular fascination with folklore and art history, as they provide insight into cultural identity, societal norms, and historical continuity. I am a firm believer that the best way we could move forward individually and collectively is by examining the past. Through this examination, we can gain deeper insight into the complexities of the human experience and how they have shaped cultural storytelling over time. With this project I am to use text analysis to explore the underlying motifs and moral themes embedded in folktales from different regions to do exactly that.

Understanding Folktales and Fairy Tales

Folktales and fairy tales encapsulate unique cultural spirits and preserve life lessons through engaging narratives. Stemming from early oral traditions folktales and fairy tales served as a way for communities to share lessons, cultural values, traditions and preserve history. Often featuring fantastical elements and moral dilemmas, they can vary significantly from one region to another, but they share a common thread. Despite differences in traits and roles among culture they typically follow a similar narrative structure and serve more often than not as means to impart valuable life and moral lessons.

Research Questions: What We Aim to Uncover

Our project seeks to answer the question: What are the most common motifs and moral themes in folktales and fairy tales across different cultures, and how do these themes compare across regions? We will gather folktales from diverse databases and apply data analytics to identify recurring motifs and themes.

Using a data-driven approach to folklore analysis allows us to detect recurring patterns and themes that may not be immediately visible through traditional literary analysis. Analyzing these stories can also enhance our understanding of how values are reflected from different regions through storytelling.

Building the Folktale Corpus: Sourcing Our Stories

To carry out this analysis, we first need to compile a diverse corpus of folktales and fairy tales from various regions. Our primary resource will be reputable online databases, including the International Folk Narrative Database.

Additionally, we will draw upon university collections from respected institutions, such as the University of Pittsburgh, University of Missouri, and University of Wisconsin, each hosting numerous folktales that reflect their respective cultures.

We will also reference the Aarne-Thompson-Uther (ATU) Index, a renowned classification system for folk narratives developed by Finnish scholar Antti Aarne. The ATU Index categorizes stories based on structural and thematic similarities, enabling streamlined comparisons of folkloric traditions worldwide.

Why This Corpus Matters for Our Research

This corpus is well-suited for this research because folktales and fairy tales frequently serve as reflections of cultural values, fears, and moral teachings across different regions and time periods. By utilizing these various databases alongside the ATU Index, we will be able to effectively analyze a diverse collection of folktales using text-as-data methods. This will enable us to systematically identify recurring narrative elements and compare their prevalence across cultural regions. A comparative approach can provide insights into global storytelling patterns as well as culturally specific variations in moral lessons and themes.
